One Year Alone in Forest of Sweden | Building Log Cabin like our Forefathers

Erik Grankvist

Sometimes we hear a call from nature. When I was 18 years old I ventured out alone with only a backpack full of simple hand tools to actualize my dream. Build my own traditional off grid log cabin by hand from the materials of the Swedish wilderness. Just like our Forefathers did.
I had no previous experience in building, gathering materials or filming. So I started studying myself the old arts and learning from my grandfather and mentor Åke Nilsson. I began to cut down trees and film with my phone, learning as I go. My project started full time once I graduated high school in summer 2019. I filmed everything myself and edited this video so you can follow my journey and hopefully learn as I do.
The tractor is a Ferguson TE20 "Grålle" from 1946, they were wildly used to move timber. In 1950 the first chainsaws came to Sweden but they were too big and heavy to be practical. I didn't want to take down every closest tree. So by using the tractor I could haul a few trees from further away, about 150 meters. I would have loved to use a horse but don't have one. yet..

Please share this video with someone who would enjoy it after the year 2020.

    2. Balistah R.O.G

He reminds me of the book "hatchet" :)

    3. Zachary Jeffs

      Bravo dude..

    4. Antti Mutta

The video is great but description not exactly fitting. You did not spend the year alone in the woods, you used also planks and other purchased wood and the cabin is not finished yet. It also took way more time to get there (considering you wrote you spend all the time there, which is not true). Maybe you wanted to say: Building An Almost Finished Log Cabin Alone in One Year Almost Like Our Forefathers? :) Still the work you put into this is staggering...

    5. F4RD4D0 PFAL762

I like how he dosent use too much strenght at all, saving energy with just technic e accuracy.

    6. Giuseppe Coter

    13. Petter Nybråten

Not sure whether this is a Sverigedemokraterna or a Miljöpartiet campaign video

      1. nativist

Miljöpartiet är kommunister som vill att alla ska bo i en liten lägenhet i storstäderna och va beroende på staten.

    14. Rocco Varone

me thinking that this is not how you sharpen an ax until I realized who is building a fucking house alone 1:18:02

    15. uday kumar

How innocent you are. And also foolish to cut so many trees

    16. C S

I wish I could just walk into a forest and do this... can I?

    17. Kelvin Nance

To say you are implacable seems redundant. You have my sincerest admiration.

    18. Oscar Lundqvist Olsson

Erik to his future kids: When I was your age I built a log cabin by myself from scratch. They are going to feel so useless haha.

You have a lot of amazing camera angles did you set up the cameras in the area prior to shooting or did you move them around while working to get better shots?

    23. Pizza Goblin

god, it must be so satisfying when a log you spent hours chipping and shaping falls perfectly into place EDIT: WAIT A MINUTE. YOU WEREN'T ALONE! THAT OLD GUY BROUGHT PLANKS TO YOU. I CALL SHENANIGANS

    26. Joe Mcnally

The fact this doesn’t have any Voice over/narrator and no background music you left the noise of the Forrest, birds, rain and the satisfying noise logs make when you strike them just right with an axe this is incredible mate

    27. Aydin Nouri

Ok it’s fun. But this kid just destroyed a forest for a THwikis video😐

    49. S3ba11

Very nice video but it can be better if you invest in camera with at least 1080p 😀

After reading the comments I learned he is/was only 18? Wow, I figured early 20's. So basically he was born with an axe in his hand, incredible work and physical prowess Erik!

    51. sub cool

Молодец! Если ты тащишь бревно - не тащи, а используй жердь. Спина это самое дорогое в таком труде. Клади больше моха. Торцы бревен замни (оббей) обухом топора.

    54. N K

Really dumb question. What is the benefit of shaving the logs?

    55. Vali V

hmmm "like our forefathers"! really? among other things, did they also had a tractor and cement packed in sacs?

    56. Risky CHANNEL

      Berasa nonton movie :v

    57. Frank Parker

like our Forefathers - uses tractor. like our Forefathers - uses modern cement. like our Forefathers - uses modern high carbon steel tools. Yeah how about no... Sorry to say what made it hard to build these structures back in the day was exactly the lack of machinery and modern tools, the error and imprecision rate was higher because error tolerance was the same as it is today but the tools had a higher margin of error.

    58. jose lopez

be careful when lifting heavy stones. Never lift with your back always your legs. if you have trouble keeping your back neutral wear a weightlifting belt. trust me man it will save you from injury.

    62. David Patrick

This is probably the most labor-intensive feat I've ever witnessed. Not only of course the sheer manpower needed to physically build the house. But that, combined with the added element of documenting and editing the whole endeavor in an artful manner boggles my mind. Truly impressive. This kid deservers millions upon millions of views for this piece of art!

    63. Hank Ogle

Literally anything dealing with a tree cutting tool. Nobody even comes close to the Swedes. Whether it’s the cutting tool or person. They always seem to dominate. The precision in fitting the logs together is better than anything built in America during the early years.

    64. pzpz2135

Can anyone explain why he isn't using the already fallen trees?

Did he buy this land? Is it his property?

    70. perdana channel

    71. Le Cobra

Dude that's awesome especially considering your young age, but how about legal issues? I don't know how it works in Sweden, but I'm pretty sure it's more or less like in any places in the west, if you don't own the land it's illegal to build anything in it. Do you own the land or were you incredibly lucky and no one noticed it?

i liked your cabin build, if i had to do it myself i would have dug down into the ground a bit and then built up the rocks and stone on the inside around the ground as walls with a stone fireplace. then i would have put on a flat log roof and then covered it with moss so it would have been completely camoflaged. techniques vary to different people, i liked and subscribed!
